Deemples Golf App cuts the chase for playing partners
Story by Roger Rodrigo/Photo by Patrick Ho
Have you gone on a merry-go-round just waiting for friends to be free to play? Or not having enough players to play on a course which only allows three-ball flights on certain days?
That almost eternal wait can be frustrating especially if you want to play at a certain time only to find out that no one else in your circle is free to come.
The solution may have just arrived at the tee, so to speak. Golfer David Wong (picture above) was one of those fed-up with the situation and sought his own way to solve the problem.
He founded Deemples Golf App which allows golfers to find partners to play anytime, anywhere. To date he has received positive feedback from golfers ranging from beginners to seasoned players, and even travelling golfers.
David relates the tale behind the creation of the app to Golf Digest Malaysia.
Golf Digest Malaysia (GDM): Can you relate some of the circumstances how this venture got off the ground and when it started?
David Wong (DW): I didn’t really want to build an app. All I wanted to do was to play golf whenever I wanted. But I realised that my friends couldn’t always play when I could, and I didn’t want to wait for them to be available for a game. I tried to look for a solution out there but there wasn’t any except for forums, which were quite disorganised. I was wishing to myself, how nice it would be if there was a list of games out there posted by golfers where I could browse, notifying when they didn’t have enough players and how I could join any that fits me, or vice versa. I got tired of waiting for a solution so I went to work on it to solve this problem of mine. This was early 2015. After a few team changes, we finally got a working team together and got an MVP off the ground in late 2016. All this while I had a full time job.
GDM:Â Does the app work for Android and Apple devices?
DW: Both Android and Apple devices. Windows will be launched soon too since we had a few requests on that.
GDM: What is the response so far and what sort of feedback are you getting?
DW: We weren’t sure if this was going to work or not. After all, I did build this just to solve my own problem. But after launching it, we were getting lots of positive feedback where a lot of golfers were actually hoping for something like this to be built but no one got around to doing it. New golfers told us they liked it because it helped them make new friends in the game. Seasoned golfers said they liked it because it helps them organise their games quicker without waiting for their friends to respond to them. Traveling golfers told us they liked it because they never had the chance to golf while travelling previously but now they can!
GDM:Â Was the app developed by yourself, if not by whom and how long was the production process?
DW:Â Yes, we have an internal development and design team. To get to MVP? A few months. But you know it’s never done being built, so we’re constantly improving and adding features that will be useful to golfers.
GDM: Is this a free app?
GDM:Â How will this app be promoted and marketed?
DW:Â So far it’s mostly by word of mouth. Golfers have been sharing Deemples with their golfing friends because they can’t always play when their friends ask them to play. Golf clubs have also been promoting Deemples to their members as it helps their members find other members to play with, which allow for more rounds at the club, as compared to if the members couldn’t play because they didn’t have anyone to play with.
GDM:Â What are the current features and will there be new features added on?
DW: Yes. We’ll continue gathering feedback from golfers, golf clubs, or any golf partners on what features would help golfers play more rounds for the benefit of the golf industry. The current features are basic. Golfers can join any available game that fits them, or create their own game to let others join them.
GDM:Â What is your immediate target?
DW:Â Getting the Deemples Golf App onto the phone of every golfer in Malaysia, helping them play golf whenever and wherever they want.
